Bike MS: MS 150 Ride 2020

Bike MS (Multiple Sclerosis) is the fundraising cycling series of the National MS Society and raises more money than any other cycling event for any other cause. To date, Bike MS cyclists, volunteers, and donors have raised more than $1.3 billion to stop MS in its tracks, restore what’s been lost, and end MS forever. The MS 150 Ride (Multiple Sclerosis) looked a little different this year than it has in years past. Brad Cofoid, team Capitan of the RoomPlace Riders MS150 team, had no intention of throwing in the towel when the pandemic caused the event to go virtual. Brad and his team of twelve (five of the riders have affiliation to The RoomPlace including; Ramon Ortiz, Durwin Arnold and Chadi Chahada) were determined to still do their part while keeping everyone safe.

Before the pandemic, the RoomPlace Riders planned for this year to be the team’s biggest year yet! Brad had been considering scaling back the team since this was his twentieth year participating in MS150. While this wasn’t the way Brad and the RoomPlace Riders envisioned their ride going, they found a way to make the best of it. In order to adjust to the unprecedent times, they decided to keep their group small while still completing their goal of biking 153 miles. Brad and his long time teammate Dave, personally mapped out the route they would ride on Saturday June 27th and Sunday June 28th – 100 miles on Saturday and 53 more miles on Sunday!

Although it was clear that fundraising would likely be down all across the board, The RoomPlace Riders, like many others, was not going to allow the pandemic to stop the fight for Multiple Sclerosis. They have already raised close to $20,000 this year! This cause touches close to home for Brad as he rides for his sister and the nearly half a million people nationwide who are afflicted with Multiple Sclerosis. The RoomPlace is very honored to sponsor the RoomPlace Riders as they continue to ride and fight for a cure! Thank you to ALL who donate and/or participate in MS150. Your efforts do not go unnoticed!

Change of Space: Winner Follow-Up

In 2019, Windy City Live and The RoomPlace partnered up to launch the “Change of Space” contest that gave one lucky winner an entire room makeover! Winning the contest was a complete surprise to Traci Smith, since her son Jordan, was the one who entered his hard-working single-mom in the contest! Leading up to winning the “Change of Space” contest, Traci lived in her apartment for a whole year without any living room furniture – one of the many sacrifices she made to give her son the best she could. Traci was greeted with great enthusiasm by the Windy City Live host, Val Warner, where she was then taken on a shopping spree at our largest and newest RoomPlace store at Lincolnwood Town Center. After exploring the whole store, Traci found her picture perfect living room set to complete her room makeover! Check out the Windy City Live Show segment of Traci receiving her living room makeover here: https://abc7chicago.com/home/the-room-place-gives-single-mom-apartment-makeover/5585231/

Getting to Know Jordan

None of this would have been possible if it wasn’t for Traci’s son, Jordan! We were lucky enough to get the opportunity to reconnect with Jordan and hear what he has been up to since entering his mom in the “Change of Space” contest. Jordan is a 21 year old hard-working young man who enjoys being active! Whether it’s participating in basketball, baseball or soccer, Jordan is up for the challenge. Jordan will be entering his senior year of college at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) to complete his degree in Health Sciences, but it doesn’t end there! Jordan plans to expand his education by pursing a career in pharmacy. Throughout the summer and into his senior year, he plans to take advantage of his Pharmacy Technician license in training by gaining experience and learning the ins and outs of being a pharmacist.

When we asked Jordan what his goal in life was, he shared that being able to provide for his family and give back to his mom is his ultimate goal. Additionally, he informed us that the RoomPlace and Windy City Live were able to help him start accomplishing his goal when his mom was awarded the Florence collection living room set   complete with all the accessories, wall art and rug to complete the transformation! The RoomPlace was, and is, honored to support Jordan in achieving his goals!

Last year, without hesitation, Jordan wanted to find a way to give back to his mom, so it is only appropriate to return the favor. This time, the RoomPlace is honored to give Jordan a leg up by helping him upgrade a bedroom for himself! Jordan chose our best-selling Denver Bedroom Group, that is available in both white and gray. Jordan thought white would go best with his room! Again, we want to congratulate Jordan on being accepted into the Health and Sciences Program at IUPUI and we hope your new RoomPlace bedroom set suites you well! We also want to thank Shay and her team at our Merrillville, Indiana location for assisting Jordan in finding the perfect bedroom set!

The Lake County Haven and The RoomPlace

The Lake County Haven came to The RoomPlace hoping to get a great price for a couple of new mattresses. The Vernon Hills General Manager Faisal Chaudhri stepped in to help, he knew The RoomPlace could do more… Many people know how The RoomPlace has given back to the community over the past 100 years. But few know how excited the store staff gets when they can help out their neighbors directly. The RoomPlace ended up donating 10 new mattresses and boxsprings to The Lake County Haven. Members of the store staff including the General Manager even helped deliver the mattresses.

"The beds will be used at the shelter and housing program for homeless women and children. Our old beds have been in use for many, many years. The box springs were cracking and the mattresses were awful! We are so happy that now our residents can get a much better night's sleep," offered Laura Sabino Executive Director of Lake Haven. The residents are very busy each day job hunting and getting their lives together. The new mattresses will offer The Haven residents a much needed night's sleep. "We are all so grateful to The RoomPlace for making this generous donation! We consider The RoomPlace to be a friend and partner with us in our fight against homelessness," continued Laura.

The Haven was started in 1992 when two Lake County neighbors came together to try to help homeless women and children. They could imagine what it would be like to be hungry and homeless, and they felt that was unacceptable. So these two ordinary people, Peg Bradley and Mike Gretz, got together and did something absolutely extraordinary. They decided to start a program to help homeless women and children. The result was the Haven. They said YES to the challenge of not only providing homeless women and children with a home, food, and the necessities of life, but also to providing a wide range of services to help people get back on their feet again. And because of their vision and dedication, hundreds of women and families have emerged from the bleak reality of homelessness to lead independent lives. There is never a question of the commitment and community envolvment The RoomPlace has. Just look back to their 100 Acts of Kindness program and you will see how excited and enthusiastic the company and each employee is at giving back and getting involved.

The RoomPlace volunteers at the Seven Bridges 10 Mile Run

This past Sunday The RoomPlace employees volunteered at the Seven Bridges 10 Mile Run in Woodridge/Downers Grove area. Our employees had a blast encouraging the runners and handing out water. We had employees from all over the Chicago area as well as several coming up from Indiana. The run had a great turn out and gave us the opportunity to meet with some really great people. Anytime we can help out the the West Suburban Community Pantry we jump on it.

Special thanks to the West Community Pantry for letting us get involved… To see more information on West Suburban Community Pantry click here.

The Roomplace giving back..

Our Hillside General Manager, Shay attended the “Back to School / No Child Left behind Rally”, where on behalf of The RoomPlace she donated schools supplies to St. Michaels’ Church.  The rally was a fun filled event where they had the streets blocked of with Jumping Jack Cages, medical RV (checking blood pressure and screening for diabetes, assorted games and stations where they were either selling baked goods or donating food.
