Stylish Ideas For Sprucing Up Your Coffee Table

how to decorate a coffee tableSometimes adding our own personal touch to a room can feel daunting, but without a few pops of interest here and there, a living space can feel downright drab. Think of the coffee table as a blank canvas to inflect some style, rather than just a placeholder for drinks, magazines and remotes. The best part is you can change out accessories easily depending on the season, the mood or the guest list. Here are some stylish ideas for how to decorate a coffee table:

  • A tray can serve the dual purpose of decoration as well as corral for odds and ends. Plus, it breaks up the space of a large coffee table. If you think the tray trend is tired, go for an artisan bowl or interesting plate.
  • Pile up the books. Coffee table books are aptly named: They are typically visually appealing and interesting to pick up and browse now and then. Use books on topics that reflect your interest. Just make sure to arrange them in a visually appealing way.
  • Add some sparkle with candles, stones or gems. It’s a simple and small way to add some shine.
  • Go for one bold decorative piece. It can be a large plant or a sculpture.
  • Fresh flowers are always good for the beauty and aroma. If you want something with more staying power, try a terrariums or a succulent.
  • Play with height. Varying heights just looks more interesting. So stack books or boxes, use a tall orchid or candlesticks to balance out lower-profile items. Our Modesto Swivel Cocktail Table comes ready with two tabletops of varying height.
  • Add metallics. If too much shine scares you, try placing small metallic accents on the coffee table for a small dose of sophistication and sparkle.
  • You can also choose a coffee table of a different shape or texture and use it as its own decorative piece. The Tamara Cocktail Table is a traditional rectangular shape with an abstract crafted metal base that is sure to turn heads. The birch veneer wood top gives a smooth surface and an interesting contrast. Or, you can go for this Liam Godiva Cocktail Ottoman with its rich color and texture. Just place a tray on top for balance.
  • A personal memento or collectible item can be use as decor. Bonus: It is a great conversation-starter.
  • Add texture and interest with a tablecloth or throw blanket.
  • Instead of one large table, opt for two or three smaller tables. They can be easily moved around and can make traffic flow less cumbersome.

How to Make the Most of a Storage Ottoman

If 2017 is the year you are (finally) going to get organized, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions. After all, who doesn’t want to save time, effort, money, and space? When looking for living room storage solutions, many turn to the ottoman. It’s like the Swiss Army knife of living room furniture: It can serve as coffee table, footrest, extra seating, and of course, storage. It’s a snap to stash clutter quickly in an ottoman when unexpected guests arrive. Here’s how to make the most of a storage ottoman:

lola-ottoman_v1-1Ottoman as coffee table: A plush ottoman is a softer option than glass or wood. If you have small children, no need to worry about kids bonking heads on sharp edges and corners. Simply place a wooden, metallic, or glass tray on top of the ottoman for drinks, remotes and magazines. At 62.5 inches in length, our Lola Platinum Storage Cocktail Ottoman offers lots of living room storage and is long enough to serve as a coffee table. It comes in faux leather with gunmetal legs for a modern touch.

monroe-black-otto_v1Ottoman as footrest: Create a cozy reading nook by placing an ottoman in front of a chair for more comfortable seating. Use it to stash books, knitting needles or crossword puzzles when not in use. You can push it to the side and use it as a table to hold drinks, too. Our Monroe Coal Storage Ottoman is upholstered in black faux leather and opens up for ample storage.

amaze-cocktailOttoman as extra seating: Whether you’re hosting a birthday party, book club or game night, you need a place to seat your guests. Ottomans are the perfect solution for stylish and comfortable extra seating options. Purchase a storage ottoman bench on casters that can easily move. This Amaze Cocktail Table with Four Accent Ottomans includes ottomans on casters that can scoot around a room and then be stowed under the table when not in use.

willow-cktlOttomans as decor: The ottoman can provide color and texture to a living room. Our Willow Cocktail Ottoman comes in a modern geographic design mixing yellow, gray, black and white, to offer a pop of interest that can break up a monochromatic living room furniture set. The Mars Red Ottoman is another way to add a bright burst of red.

The RoomPlace offers a huge variety of storage ottomans for sale in various colors, sizes and textures. Our ottomans online are frequently on special, so you’re more than likely to find the ottoman you need at the price you can afford. Catch the Big Game on a Big Screen

manhattan-3pc-entertainmentwall_v1While nothing quite replaces the thrill of watching a game in person, today’s TV and sound technology can create a viewing experience that comes in a close second. With ultra high-definition technology offering four times the clarity of full high-def, the colors are brighter and the details are sharper. You’ll see every bead of sweat come off of Jimmy Butler’s forehead and can count the stitches on Paul George’s jersey when the Chicago Bulls and Indiana Pacers square off. With a flat panel TV entertainment center, you can bring the arena into your living room.

An entertainment center offers a home for all of your entertainment equipment: TV, DVD player, Apple TV, Roku, gaming system, stereo system, DVDs, CDs and games. That’s a lot of equipment (not to mention all of their cords and extra accessories). An entertainment center should support your TV size and offer both open and closed shelving: open shelving for remote-controlled equipment such as DVD players and closed shelving or drawers for whatever you want to hide, such as cords, controllers and manuals. Some may even want the option of hiding the TV behind cabinet doors when not in use.

Crestridge.jpgOur Crestridge 3 piece media console gives off the Craftsman vibe of warm wood and antique slate cabinet doors. The set includes a TV console for a 60” TV with open shelving and two closed-door cabinets and a pass-through hole to hide unsightly cords. The console is flanked by two bookcases with five shelves each and both are topped with matching antique slate moldings.

sierra-78inch-wallunit_v1If the industrial look is more your style, consider the Sierra 3 piece 78” Entertainment Wall. The tobacco finish with hand sawn weathered distressing makes this piece unique and rustic, while the powder coated metal frame adds an industrial vibe. The console can accommodate up to a 78” TV and provides drawers on a ball bearing glide system underneath for easy storage, with open shelving for electronics. The two open bookcases are the perfect place to display valuables, plants, books and other decorative items.

wesley-6pc_v1When you really can’t miss a second of a game, you need an entertainment center that also keeps your drinks cold and your feet warm. The Wesley 6 piece entertainment center comes with everything you’d expect of an entertainment center plus a fireplace insert and two beverage coolers. The firebox with fireplace insert heats a room up to 1000 square feet. What’s more, it plugs into a standard, 3-prong grounded outlet — no venting or gas lines necessary — and is remote-controlled. The TV is flanked by a quiet, vibration-free beverage cooler tower on one side and a wine cooler with 18-bottle capacity on the other side. Glass cases atop the beverage coolers are a handy place to store barware or decorative items. With adjustable shelves and interior LED touch lighting, you can customize your storage options.

Creating a clean, organized entertainment center is getting easier by the year as smart TV technology has eliminated the need for extra equipment like cable boxes, stereos, and DVD players. With Smart TV technology, users can stream the full range of media content directly to their TVs via a WiFi connection. Smart TVs with Ultra High-Definition picture brings the viewing experience to life, and wireless soundbars and subwoofers can create surround sound worthy of a movie theater. With an entertainment center like that, your friends will feel like they have courtside seats when they come over to watch the Bulls or the Pacers.

At The RoomPlace, you can Get It All: a Smart TV, the right sound equipment and an entertainment center to house it all. Our entertainment centers fulfill your storage needs and please the eye with a variety of styles, colors and finishes. Visit one of our Chicago or Indiana furniture stores for entertainment center ideas or browse our full collection online at http://www.theroomplace.com. With flexible financing and fast delivery, you can still set up the entertainment center of your dreams before the NBA All-Star Break. Your friends and family will thank you.

Warm It Up for Winter

Fireplace insertBaby, it’s cold outside! Winter calls for snuggling up in front a fire with a good book and a warm drink. When it’s cold and dark outside, your home should be a warm and cozy haven. Here are some winter home decorating ideas to warm it up for winter:

Focus on the Fireplace
Make the fireplace the centerpiece of your living space. Arrange the furniture around it, placing cozy chairs, ottomans, lamps and even a small table in front of it, so you can relax by the fire. Make the fireplace the focal point by dressing it up a bit, adding a new screen and a basket for wood. Dress up the mantle with art or a nice mirror, and add a few decorative items.

If your home does not have a fireplace, don’t worry: you are not destined to live out the winter months in frigid misery. Simply add a fireplace insert. Fireplace inserts create a realistic flame effect with adjustable colors, brightness and speed settings. It does not require venting or gas lines and can work with or without heat, so you can enjoy it all year long. The Regency Fireplace from The RoomPlace has an empire cherry finish Rosette medallion centerpiece, carved acanthus leaf corbels and beaded molding trim, creating a traditional, beautiful fireplace at a fraction of the cost. The Regency fireplace can heat a room up to 1000 square feet and comes equipped with energy saving LED technology.

Add Texture and Color
Add texture with pillows, throw blankets, sheepskin or fluffy area rugs. Heavy curtains also keep the warmth in and the cold out.

Don’t be afraid to use color. Winter can be cold and dark, but winter home decor doesn’t need to be. You can add pops of color in pillows, rugs or throws. Some color trends for winter this year include cranberry, yellow, metallics, grape, and camel.

Bring the Outdoors In
Use extra greenery trimmed from the Christmas tree on the mantle. Put pinecones and wood in a large hurricane for a simple, rustic centerpiece.

Incorporate the smells of winter: cinnamon, vanilla, orange, cranberry, pine, and rosemary. Place potpourri jars in entryways or boil some on the stovetop when guests come over.

While winter weather rages on outside, stay warm and comfortable in your home. The RoomPlace offers fireplace inserts, textured rugs, and comfortable chairs and ottomans to make your living space nice and cozy. Visit one of our Chicago furniture stores for total-room concept design inspiration or shop one of our frequent Web specials from the comfort of your own home. Make sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for more winter decor ideas and the latest in color trends.

How to Clean a Microfiber Couch

Carly Microfiber CouchThere’s no doubt about it: Couches can take quite a beating. Microfiber couches are popular not only because they look nice, but also because they are durable and water-resistant. The colors tend to stay brighter, and the fine material repels water and dirt. That said, they are not stain- or watermark-resistant. To help, here are some tips on how to clean a microfiber couch.

First, check the cleaning instructions on your microfiber couch’s tag. It will tell you what kind of solution to use for cleaning your microfiber couch.

  • “W” means you should use a water-based solution
  • “S” means you should use a solvent-based solution
  • “S-W” means you can use either
  • “X” means vacuum only; no water- or solvent-based solutions.

If there is no tag at all, or an S, use rubbing alcohol or a clear alcohol such as vodka to clean stains. (But first, always test in an inconspicuous area.) Spritz on the solvent, and rub gently with a white sponge or cloth. Let it dry, and then use a soft brush on the affected area to fluff the fibers back up.

If your microfiber couch requires a water-based solution, take care: too much water can leave marks. Instead, use dishwashing soap to create soap suds and then apply the suds (not the water) in a circular motion on the stain with a white sponge. Blot with a white cloth to absorb as much water as possible.

Vacuum the couch once a week to keep dirt from setting into a stain. You can also brush the microfiber with a soft, nylon-bristled brush to keep it soft. Do not ever use bleach, acetone, carpet cleaner or upholstery cleaner to clean microfiber couches.

While microfiber couches are durable, life can be messy. That’s why The RoomPlace offers a furniture-protection plan for getting the toughest stains out of the couch. Our PremiumPlus 1 Plan protects your microfiber couch from the following:

  • food or beverage stains
  • human or pet bodily fluid stains
  • grass, grease or shoe polish stains
  • ballpoint pen, ink, crayon, or cosmetic stains
  • nail polish stains
  • accidental rips, cuts, burns, or punctures

Our furniture repair and protection program is administered by Guardian Protection Products.

The good news? If you don’t use any portion of your warranty during the 5-year coverage period, you receive a full refund of the furniture protection plan price in the form of an in-store credit, valid for a period of one year from date of issuance towards your next furniture purchase of $499 or more.

Purchasing a couch is a big investment, so you want it to last a long time. A furniture protection plan can give you the peace of mind that your microfiber couch won’t be ruined by a slobbering dog, a mischievous toddler, or a clumsy guest. Shop online or visit one of our Chicagoland furniture stores to see for yourself the durability and comfort that a microfiber couch affords.

Want to Know the Best Couch for A Bad Back?

torino-sectional1_v1We spend a lot of time sitting on the sofa. Yes, we want it to look good, but it should also feel good. Comfort is especially important for people with bad backs. Finding the right couches for bad backs can be tricky. They should be neither too firm, nor too soft. While a soft, plush couch that you sink into seems comfortable, getting in and out of it can exacerbate back and joint problems. A stiff couch can be equally hard on the back.

A Memorypedic foam couch is the perfect solution. It adjusts to your body and spine, offering both support and comfort. You don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort either: The RoomPlace offers a number of Memorypedic foam sofas and recliners that are contemporary and elegant.

Our Tory 3 piece sectional includes a reclining sofa, reclining loveseat, and a wedge. The cushions are made with Memorypedic foam that adjusts to your body so your spine is supported and comfortable. It even comes with a powered option to further reduce strain. The leather upholstery is infused with polyurethane for extra durability, and with breathable material, this sectional stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It also features a seat that drops down into a table with two cup holders and a storage console.

Our Naples Power Three-Piece Living Room set proves you don’t have to skimp on style to get extra back support. It is made of 100% heavyweight Italian leather. With high backs and pillow top arms, the Memorypedic foam seat toppers will keep your spine in correct alignment. The loveseat, recliner, and sofa included in this set are all power-operated, so you can easily adjust the seats for ideal comfort. With USB ports on side panel switches, you can charge your phone from the comfort of your couch.

If you still have questions about how to buy a good couch or which sofa material is the best, visit one of our Chicago furniture stores. Our helpful team will be happy to help you find the perfect couch for you. At The RoomPlace, you can Get It All: a sofa that is comfortable, durable, stylish, and best of all, affordable. Shop online or call us at 630-783-8000 for more information about our Memorypedic sectionals. Keep Your Independence With a Lift Chair

We all want to age gracefully and remain in our homes for as long as possible. Mobility issues can make it difficult to remain independent, though. Even small movements, such as getting up from a chair can be extremely difficult. Luckily, there are plenty of devices to assist in mobility that can help elderly or disabled people remain in their homes for as long as possible. One of those options is a Lift chair.

How does a Lift chair work?

A Lift chair is similar to a recliner, with one major difference: It can take you from reclined or seated up to a vertical standing position. Using a remote control, you can recline fully, recline partially, sit upright, or be lifted to standing position.

What are some special features of a Lift chair?

The RoomPlace offers a variety of Lift chairs to meet comfort, style, and mobility needs. They offer quiet and smooth transitions from reclined to sitting to standing with the touch of a button. Our Lift chairs are durable yet incredibly soft, and come in a range of attractive colors like coffee, mocha, and gray to go with any decor.

overdrive-lift-chair

Lift chairs should be safe. That’s why the Overdrive Lift chair has an emergency battery backup in case of a power failure in the home. It also comes with a side pocket to store your Lift chair remote, TV remote, phone, or other items.

soother-lift-chair

For the ultimate in comfort and relaxation, the Soother Power Lift chair offers heat, massage, and plush seating to help sooth lower back pain. You can adjust the type of massage you receive —steady, wave, or pulse — as well as the intensity of the massage.

presley-lift-chairA chair should fit your body perfectly. The Presley Power Lift chair comes with Comfort-Gel infused Memory-Pedic foam so your chair adjusts to your body, not the other way around.

As one of the oldest furniture stores in Chicago, The RoomPlace knows a thing or two about aging gracefully. For more than 100 years, we have provided stylish, comfortable furniture at an affordable price. You can shop our collection of lift chairs from home at http://www.theroomplace.com or visit any of our showrooms to try them out. Going Wireless: How to Set Up a Cable-Free Entertainment Center

wall-unit-entertainment-centerEven in this wireless age, cords are a fact of life. Nothing ruins a nice, clean room more than cords dangling from a wall-mounted TV, bungled up underneath a beautiful TV stand, or running under an area rug. With a little creativity, you can set up a cable-free entertainment center.

We love the look a flat-screen TV mounted on a wall above a TV stand, but dangling cords are a serious eyesore. For wall-mounted units, you can hide the wires by routing your wires through the wall. Many hardware stores sell DIY kits for this, or you can enlist the help of a professional. It requires drilling a hole into the drywall behind your TV and then drilling another hole behind your TV stand. You then snake the cords down through the wall, and they pop out behind your entertainment center. The RoomPlace offers TV stands with predrilled holes in the back, so you can easily run wires through to your cable box, Roku, or Apple TV.

If drilling large holes in your wall sounds far too complicated, consider a wall unit entertainment center that encloses the TV and offers plenty of enclosed shelving to hide cables.

Once you have connected all of the various cords, keep them looking tidy by using velcro or twist ties to bundle them together and keep them organized. You can also hide a power strip inside your TV stand, or even mount it to the wall behind your TV stand, so you don’t have cords sitting on the ground.

To further cut down on the cord chaos, invest in a smart HDTV that connects wirelessly to the router. That way, you can stream shows and music without the extra equipment of a Roku or Apple TV.

At The RoomPlace, we believe you can Get It All: a TV entertainment center that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Shop our entire collection of entertainment centers online at www.theroomplace.com or visit one of our showrooms in the Chicago or Indianapolis areas. You can also follow us on Instagram and Facebook for more decorating ideas.

Mix It Up: 3 New Ways to Style Cushions on a Sectional Sofa

Sectional sofas are meant for lounging. Whether it’s TV watching, reading, or just hanging out, a sectional sofa should offer plenty of comfort but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. Throw pillows are an easy and inexpensive way to also add depth, texture, and unique style to a sectional sofa. They can tie other design elements into the room or offer a much needed contrast or pop of personality. With so many to choose from, finding the right throw pillows can be a bit tricky. Here are some tips on how to style a sectional sofa with throw pillows:

1. Mix a bold pattern cushion with a more subtle cushion.
malibu-5-piece-sectional-cuddler-reverse
Patterned throw pillows, when paired with a solid accent colored pillow can add symmetry and a nice contrast. The subtle chenille fabric of the Monterey sectional pairs perfectly with geometric, colorful abstract throw pillows. The throw pillows come with the set, and are zipable and reversible for simple care and maintenance.

2. Add a little shimmer with metallic pillows in gold or silver.newcastle-platinum-2pc-sect_v1Metallics are a hot trend this year, and metallic pillows in gold or silver add warmth, comfort, and style to a contemporary sectional sofa. These throw pillows incorporate the sofa color while also offering some much needed contrast and texture.

3. Don’t be afraid to add a little color to a neutral sofa.
monroe-new-white-2pc.jpg
A white sectional sofa practically cries out for a pop of color, and red cushions do just the trick. Matching your throw pillow to the color of an accent wall in the room or a certain hue from the art hung above the sofa will also work well.

When styling sectional sofas, there are a number of ways to get the look right. Repeating the mix of cushions in each of the three corners creates a harmonious look while still offering plenty of comfort. You can also try a mixing up patterns in the same color scheme. Another option is just going with the colors, patterns, and styles you like. Sometimes the most random assortment of pillows looks the best.

At The RoomPlace, we help our customers Get It All: sectional sofas in a range of styles, colors, and sizes, including leather sectionals and small sectional sofas, all at an affordable price. Shop our entire selection online at www.theroomplace.com or visit us at an of our store locations for sectional styling inspiration. How to Decorate a Long Living Room

paulie-chaise-creamA long narrow living room is a design challenge to be sure. The room can feel cavernous and cold, and guests can feel like they are shouting across the great divide to converse. It can also feel lopsided if one part of the room houses all of the furniture. Yet there are a number of long living room ideas that can add comfort, style and functionality to your space.

The best way to break up a long living room is by dividing it up into two or more areas. First, you need to create the main seating area, centered around a focal point such as a fireplace or an entertainment center. Next, you will want to decide what else you would like to add to the space. You can add another seating area, create a work space with a desk, set up a cozy reading nook with a chaise lounge and an accent table, or even set up a bar area.

Though long living rooms can be narrow, avoid placing furniture up against the walls. Instead, floating the furniture in the middle of the room actually makes the space feels more intimate. In choosing furniture, you want the pieces to fit the room. An extra long sofa or sectional can fill the space well. Balance a long sectional out with two small identical coffee tables side by side or a large ottoman. You can also use two or three smaller-scale sofas, but make sure the couches match to avoid a hodgepodge look.

When setting up multiple areas in one room, it is important that the room still feel cohesive. Stick to one design style and color scheme. You can also add symmetry by using identical area rugs in the separate areas. To make sure the room feels balanced, avoid placing all of the large furniture on one side of the room. Adding a large bookcase, a piece of art or an ottoman in the secondary space will prevent one side of the room from looking dwarfed. Be sure to leave space for people to move around, preferably a pathway about 3 feet wide.

If you have been frustrated by how to decorate a long living room, The RoomPlace can help inspire and guide you. Visit any of our showrooms to see how furniture can work together in a narrow space, or shop our Living Room collections online at www.theroomplace.com. You can also follow us on Instagram and Facebook for more design inspiration. Plus, we offer frequent promotions and easy installment plans, so our customers in the Chicago and Indianapolis areas can get the style they want at the price they can afford. You can Get It All at The RoomPlace!
