Featured Image: Harper Fruitwood 60″ TV Stand From The RoomPlace

If you’re keeping up with any trends in the interior design industry, you probably know that the mid-century modern movement has made a comeback. And we don’t think this trend is going anywhere soon. Designers and homeowners alike love the simple, organic forms, clean lines and functionality of this design style. Anyone who finds retro or minimalist design appealing is sure to appreciate mid-century modern home accents.

We’ve gathered five of our favorite mid-century-inspired pieces of contemporary furniture to give you a glimpse into what this style has to offer. But first, let’s answer the question that’s probably on your mind: What exactly is mid-century modern design?

What is Mid-Century Modern Design?

“Mid-century modern” is a term used to describe the interior design and architecture trends from roughly the mid-1930s to 1965. (However, some people consider “mid-century” to be limited to 1947-1957.) It’s characterized by a few key elements, including:

  • Simple, clean lines
  • Organic and geometric forms and curves
  • Focus on functionality over appearance
  • Minimal decoration and an uncluttered look
  • Contrasting colors

Much of what makes the mid-century look so appealing is that it’s versatile and timeless. It’s not limited to a specific color palette or material, and it tends to blend beautifully with other design styles, too. So whether you’re looking for a single piece of mid-century furniture to complete a room or you want to embrace the movement throughout your whole house, discover your next favorite piece with the ideas below.

How to Rearrange Your Furniture for a Holiday Party

The holidays can be stressful, especially if you’ll be entertaining guests for a holiday party. With these tips from our design experts at The RoomPlace, you can learn how to rearrange your furniture for a holiday party without losing your unique sense of efficiency and style.

Figure Out Your Highest Party Priority

If you’re throwing a holiday party, it’s important to figure out your main priority so that you can rearrange furniture accordingly. For many families, for example, dinner is the main event, which means that you’ll need to make extra space for tables and chairs. If you’re hosting a dinner party, we recommend adding leaves to the dining room table and clearing out living room furniture to make space for additional tables and chairs. If your family’s main event revolves more around opening gifts, rearrange your furniture around the Christmas tree.

Remove What You Don’t Need

While it can be tempting to want to show off that great conversation piece you bought last year, when it comes to throwing a holiday party, you might want to consider removing any furniture that isn’t serving a specific purpose. Remember, people need space to move comfortably around the room.

Let Your Holiday Decorations Take Center Stage

You may end up having to remove certain furniture pieces to create a more functional party layout. By making your holiday decorations the focal point of your living room, you can take the attention away from empty spaces and create a festive environment for your holiday party.

Arrange for Small, Intimate Groups

Even if you have a large, open space, it’s important to place furniture in small groups to help create a sense of intimacy among you guests. No one wants to have to lean over superfluous furniture to hear what the other guests are saying, and if the furniture is arranged poorly, it can create unneeded social pressure.

Whether you’re designing a living room for entertaining or doing a full-scale redesign, The RoomPlace has living room furniture for every style. Browse online or a visit one of our furniture showrooms in Chicagoland or the Greater Indianapolis area today!

Everything You Need to Host an Awesome BBQ

Patio furnitureSummer is in full swing and BBQ-ing is what it’s all about. Burgers, hot dogs, a cooler of cold drinks…what’s not to love? If you’re a new homeowner, or just haven’t played host before, read on to learn about what you’ll need to throw an awesome backyard BBQ!

1) A Grill

The grill is undoubtedly the most important component of a barbecue. Whether you buy a large or small grill, choose gas or electric, opt for the added bells and whistles or not, a grill you like and feel comfortable cooking on is a must have for hosting a summer BBQ. We recommend taking it for a test run before inviting guests over.

2) Outdoor Furniture

A high-quality outdoor furniture set is a great investment that can last for years and years if properly cared for. Look for a set that is weather-hardy and can be left outdoors for the entire season. If you live in a climate that gets occasional summer rain, look for a set with weather resistant cushions or ones that are easy to remove and replace.

3) Utensils & Plates

Don’t forget to pick up paper or plastic cups, plates, and cutlery. You can opt to use you real silverware, plates and glasses, but it’s a lot more to clean up when the party ends. If you’re having more than a handful of guests, disposable is a major time-saver!

4) Décor

A little backyard décor can set the mood and also be functional. If you’re BBQ is likely to last into the late evening hours, you’ll need to get some lights. A few strands of Christmas lights, lanterns for the table, or tiki torches around the yard will look great and allow you to keep the fun going all night.

5) Music

Don’t forget the music! The right tunes can make or break a party. Set the mood with music by curating your own playlist or throw on a summer playlist from Spotify or Pandora.

Summer is our favorite season and we’re happy to share our tips with you on how to host an awesome backyard BBQ. Remember that The RoomPlace is one of the best places to buy patio furniture online because we offer a wide selection, great deals, and free shipping!

Small Space? Consider the Versatile Daybed

Daybed with trundleOne of the biggest drawbacks to living in a small space is lacking a comfortable space for overnight guests. If you would rather not give up your own bed or balk at the idea of putting your mother on a blowup mattress, you might consider a daybed.

As those living in small spaces know, choosing furniture that serves dual purposes is a necessity. A daybed fits the bill: It can be used as a bed and as a seating area. Plus, you can store luggage or seasonal wardrobe items underneath.

Many of us don’t have the luxury of a guest bedroom, but daybeds can turn home offices or sewing rooms into guest rooms.

If you have multiple overnight guests or kids who love to have sleepovers, a daybed with a trundle underneath offers double the sleeping area. Some trundles stay on the ground, while others can be elevated to form one large bed.

Daybeds come in a variety of styles. The metal daybed is the traditional look, but these days wood daybeds and upholstered daybeds are becoming more popular as they tend to look more like a sofa when not in use. Our Donovan daybed is a contemporary take on the daybed, with faux leather gray fabric, baseball stitching and gently sleighed padded arms and back. Add a coverlet and pillows, and it looks like a sofa. Slide out the trundle, and you have sleeping for two guests.

At The RoomPlace, we know how important it is to find furniture that fits into your existing space and your budget. Our comfortable daybeds will impress your overnight guests and help you make the most of your space. Come see our daybeds for sale at our Chicago and Indiana furniture stores, or visit us online for frequent web specials and fast delivery. Order a daybed today. Your guests will thank you!

Catch the Big Game on a Big Screen

manhattan-3pc-entertainmentwall_v1While nothing quite replaces the thrill of watching a game in person, today’s TV and sound technology can create a viewing experience that comes in a close second. With ultra high-definition technology offering four times the clarity of full high-def, the colors are brighter and the details are sharper. You’ll see every bead of sweat come off of Jimmy Butler’s forehead and can count the stitches on Paul George’s jersey when the Chicago Bulls and Indiana Pacers square off. With a flat panel TV entertainment center, you can bring the arena into your living room.

An entertainment center offers a home for all of your entertainment equipment: TV, DVD player, Apple TV, Roku, gaming system, stereo system, DVDs, CDs and games. That’s a lot of equipment (not to mention all of their cords and extra accessories). An entertainment center should support your TV size and offer both open and closed shelving: open shelving for remote-controlled equipment such as DVD players and closed shelving or drawers for whatever you want to hide, such as cords, controllers and manuals. Some may even want the option of hiding the TV behind cabinet doors when not in use.

Crestridge.jpgOur Crestridge 3 piece media console gives off the Craftsman vibe of warm wood and antique slate cabinet doors. The set includes a TV console for a 60” TV with open shelving and two closed-door cabinets and a pass-through hole to hide unsightly cords. The console is flanked by two bookcases with five shelves each and both are topped with matching antique slate moldings.

sierra-78inch-wallunit_v1If the industrial look is more your style, consider the Sierra 3 piece 78” Entertainment Wall. The tobacco finish with hand sawn weathered distressing makes this piece unique and rustic, while the powder coated metal frame adds an industrial vibe. The console can accommodate up to a 78” TV and provides drawers on a ball bearing glide system underneath for easy storage, with open shelving for electronics. The two open bookcases are the perfect place to display valuables, plants, books and other decorative items.

wesley-6pc_v1When you really can’t miss a second of a game, you need an entertainment center that also keeps your drinks cold and your feet warm. The Wesley 6 piece entertainment center comes with everything you’d expect of an entertainment center plus a fireplace insert and two beverage coolers. The firebox with fireplace insert heats a room up to 1000 square feet. What’s more, it plugs into a standard, 3-prong grounded outlet — no venting or gas lines necessary — and is remote-controlled. The TV is flanked by a quiet, vibration-free beverage cooler tower on one side and a wine cooler with 18-bottle capacity on the other side. Glass cases atop the beverage coolers are a handy place to store barware or decorative items. With adjustable shelves and interior LED touch lighting, you can customize your storage options.

Creating a clean, organized entertainment center is getting easier by the year as smart TV technology has eliminated the need for extra equipment like cable boxes, stereos, and DVD players. With Smart TV technology, users can stream the full range of media content directly to their TVs via a WiFi connection. Smart TVs with Ultra High-Definition picture brings the viewing experience to life, and wireless soundbars and subwoofers can create surround sound worthy of a movie theater. With an entertainment center like that, your friends will feel like they have courtside seats when they come over to watch the Bulls or the Pacers.

At The RoomPlace, you can Get It All: a Smart TV, the right sound equipment and an entertainment center to house it all. Our entertainment centers fulfill your storage needs and please the eye with a variety of styles, colors and finishes. Visit one of our Chicago or Indiana furniture stores for entertainment center ideas or browse our full collection online at http://www.theroomplace.com. With flexible financing and fast delivery, you can still set up the entertainment center of your dreams before the NBA All-Star Break. Your friends and family will thank you.

Going Wireless: How to Set Up a Cable-Free Entertainment Center

wall-unit-entertainment-centerEven in this wireless age, cords are a fact of life. Nothing ruins a nice, clean room more than cords dangling from a wall-mounted TV, bungled up underneath a beautiful TV stand, or running under an area rug. With a little creativity, you can set up a cable-free entertainment center.

We love the look a flat-screen TV mounted on a wall above a TV stand, but dangling cords are a serious eyesore. For wall-mounted units, you can hide the wires by routing your wires through the wall. Many hardware stores sell DIY kits for this, or you can enlist the help of a professional. It requires drilling a hole into the drywall behind your TV and then drilling another hole behind your TV stand. You then snake the cords down through the wall, and they pop out behind your entertainment center. The RoomPlace offers TV stands with predrilled holes in the back, so you can easily run wires through to your cable box, Roku, or Apple TV.

If drilling large holes in your wall sounds far too complicated, consider a wall unit entertainment center that encloses the TV and offers plenty of enclosed shelving to hide cables.

Once you have connected all of the various cords, keep them looking tidy by using velcro or twist ties to bundle them together and keep them organized. You can also hide a power strip inside your TV stand, or even mount it to the wall behind your TV stand, so you don’t have cords sitting on the ground.

To further cut down on the cord chaos, invest in a smart HDTV that connects wirelessly to the router. That way, you can stream shows and music without the extra equipment of a Roku or Apple TV.

At The RoomPlace, we believe you can Get It All: a TV entertainment center that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Shop our entire collection of entertainment centers online at www.theroomplace.com or visit one of our showrooms in the Chicago or Indianapolis areas. Beautiful Table Settings and Centerpiece Ideas for Fall

During the dog days of summer, it’s hard to imagine that the air will soon turn crisp and the leaves will change color. Fall is indeed right around the corner, though, and with it, the warm tones of autumn. Since fall is all about the harvest, what better place to incorporate the colors and themes of autumn than at the dining room table? Here are some beautiful table settings and centerpiece ideas to adorn your dining room tables this fall:

gray dining room table
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/56787645279528055/

For a rustic, weathered grey dining room table, try a centerpiece like the one featured above that matches the tone of your table. The white pumpkins, hydrangea, antlers, and votive candles give this a modern and sophisticated look.

Counter Height Dining Set
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/198299189819784761/

If you have a counter-height dining set and a pendant light or chandelier, you need to keep the dining room table decor low profile and simple. A centerpiece like the one featured here uses a large fall candle in a hurricane surrounded by pinecones pairs nicely with a dark espresso dining table, particularly if you place a burlap runner underneath for some contrast.

Concrete Dining Tables
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/11188699049961644/

Concrete dining tables are cool and contemporary, so they don’t necessarily lend themselves to the oranges and reds of fall. To warm a concrete dining room table for fall, try a centerpiece like this that incorporates white flowers, white pumpkins, and plenty of greenery. Don’t forget to add white candles for sophistication and warmth.

Glass Tabletop
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/282671314089632064/

A circular, glass tabletop is the perfect setting for a large floral bouquet like this one. Use the flowers of fall: dahlias, mums, sunflowers and roses. Either go monochromatic or mix it up with wine-colored roses and greenery.

Oak Dining Tables
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/130745195409240790/

Oak dining tables offer the most versatility for the oranges, yellows, reds and browns that dominate the season. Just step outside your door and gather orange and yellow leaves, branches, acorns, and pumpkins. Add candles and voila, you have an easy and beautiful fall centerpiece like the one above.

Contemporary Dining Sets
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/99079260529744531/

Contemporary dining sets with black tabletops are the perfect match for one of the season’s hottest colors: gold. Use a centerpiece like this with gilded pumpkins, pinecones, and votive candles for a sparkly, sophisticated look.

Buffets and Sideboards
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/AVtT2ti5o-61vacXoKHUks6zbKiEzUQ2YIfeJJTBgjKsTxiGEPVmZU0/

Don’t forget about your other dining room furniture. Buffets and sideboards are the perfect place to add large-scale and tall centerpieces because they won’t obscure conversation or food-passing. For your buffet or sideboard, fill a large clear vase with branches, large floral bouquets, wheat, or even edibles like the one featured above, which uses cranberries, seeds, and popcorn kernels.

Edible Centerpiece
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/146718900334438700/

For a different twist, try filling your buffet with a long edible arrangement like this one made of grapes, gourds, and candles spaced throughout.

Fall truly offers some of the best dining room table decor of the entire year. The RoomPlace offers dining room sets in every style that are affordable and stylish. You can truly Get It All at The RoomPlace! Browse our entire Dining Room furniture selection online at www.theroomplace.com or visit one of our furniture stores in Chicago and Indianapolis for more dining room design inspiration.
