How to Care for Black Lacquer Furniture

Monterey 7 Pc. King Bedroom

Black lacquer bedroom furniture adds depth to bedroom furnishings. Its urban, upscale feel lends a hotel-like atmosphere and is ideal for those seeking modern design elements in the bedroom. The care of black gloss bedroom furniture is a little different than cleaning standard wood furniture. Regular cleaning maintenance can leave streaks and dust behind. Certain substances can also scratch the delicate finish, so special care is needed to protect the furniture and keep it bright and shiny in appearance.

What Do I Need to Maintain Black Lacquer Furniture?

Maintaining your black lacquer bedroom set doesn’t have to be a hassle, and there are only a few basic supplies you will need. For regular cleaning purposes, you will need soft cotton cloths and a mild soap. If you need to repair chipped black lacquer furniture or its finish, you’ll want a wax stick, shellac and a varnish or lacquer.

How Do You Keep Black Furniture Clean?

Black bedroom furniture sets show dirt and dust easily and will also readily reveal scratches. Although the finish appears exceptionally hard, it is still prone to chipping and denting. The best way to clean black lacquer is to use a soft, damp cloth that has been wrung of all moisture. Be sure to only use soft cotton or flannel. Never coarse fabrics or paper towels as they can cause scratching. Begin dusting the furniture in long straight sweeps rather than a circular motion which can leave wipe marks.

Once dusting is complete, go back over the furniture with a dry cloth. If there are still fingerprints or smudges, then it may be necessary to use a mild soap such as Murphy’s Oil Soap. Never use heavy furniture polish on black lacquer furniture as it will streak and weaken the black finish with prolonged use.

How Do You Maintain Black Furniture?

The easiest way to ensure your black lacquer furniture stays looking its best is by taking proper care of it. You should be wiping your furniture down with a soft, damp cloth at least once a week. In addition to that, you need to be careful about how you treat your furniture. You should avoid getting your furniture wet, so watch out for any spills and clean them up immediately. If you have a dresser or nightstand as part of your black lacquer bedroom furniture, consider adding a decorative cloth or runner to protect its surface.

Can you refinish black lacquer furniture? Depending on the condition of your furniture, it can be pretty easy to refinish. You want to find a matching black lacquer and apply a few even coats. If your furniture is full of scratches or chips, you will need to fill them in before applying a lacquer or varnish.

With proper care and maintenance, you will be able to enjoy the appearance of your black lacquer bedroom furniture for many years to come. How to Choose a Coffee Table for Sectional with Chaise

Offering more seating than a traditional sofa and more comfort, too, sectional sofas with chaise have become a very popular living room furniture option.

These sectionals look fantastic when paired with the right table, but it can look awkward or unbalanced when done wrong. We often get asked for advice on this topic, so to help, we’ve put together a few simple tips to help you find the best coffee tables for a sectional with a chaise lounge.

Red Sectional Sofa

Maxim Red Sectional

How Do I Choose a Coffee Table for my Sectional?

There are two main factors to consider when picking a coffee table for your sectional sofa with chaise: placement and size. With a standard sofa, the placement of your coffee table doesn’t matter as much as long as it’s 14” to 18” away from the edge of the seats. With a chaise sectional, you want to make sure the table doesn’t go past the chaise.

A coffee table should be proportional to the size of the sectional. When trying to determine the right coffee table size for your sectional, you’ll want to start by taking a few measurements. Measure from each end of the sofa to create a square, using the L of the sectional as two sides of the square. Jot down those two measurements and subtract 16”-18” depending on your preferred amount of legroom. The two numbers you are left with will be the length and width for the coffee table that will best fit your space. Make sure to double-check your measurement to avoid buying the wrong size table.

A standard coffee table is about 18” high, but if you have a couch that sits higher, you’ll want to look for a table that’s a bit higher as well. If it’s too short, it can be difficult to reach and look out of balance.

What Shape Coffee Table Works Best with a Sectional?

If the sides of your sectional are the same length, a square coffee table or round coffee table will look best. These shapes will make it easy for everyone to reach the table and provide equal space for setting down drinks and other items. A round table is an especially good choice if you have children or pets who can bump into corners. If your chaise sectional is L-shaped, opt for a rectangular coffee table. These tables help even out the long side of the sofa. You can also use an elongated round or oval table here. If you really want to get creative and you have a larger sectional, try using a long ottoman or combing two ottomans together to make your own table. A tray can be added to create a solid surface for holding snacks and beverages. Most importantly, remember to keep the coffee table within the boundary edges of your sofa for a neat, balanced look and clear walking paths.

Does My Coffee Table Have to Match My Sectional?

Your coffee table or ottoman doesn’t have to match your sectional exactly, but it should be a similar style. A sectional with clean lines should be paired with a contemporary coffee table that also has clean lines. An overstuffed sectional will look great paired with an overstuffed ottoman. If you have other tables like accent and side tables, you also want to take them into consideration. You don’t want your tables to match exactly, but they should still complement each other.

With hundreds of coffee tables for every style and budget, we’re sure you’ll find the perfect coffee table for your sectional with chaise at The RoomPlace. Building a Mini Bar at Home – The RoomPlace

You’ve dutifully scoured Pinterest and found recipes for mouthwatering martinis and delectable Manhattans. Now you just need somewhere to serve them. The RoomPlace has a serious love affair with mini bars this summer. It’s the perfect place to gather and unwind — and it makes happy hour feel just a little bit more special. Here are some home mini bar ideas you can bring to your living room or patio.

How Can I Make My Home Bar Look Good?

When putting together a mini bar setup, you want to create something that looks appealing to yourself and guests. To accomplish this, you’ll need to make sure you have matching furniture, whether you do that by buying a complete set or carefully choosing pieces that complement each other. You also want to pick a stylish bar to center everything around.

The Sutton Bar helps you to turn your cocktail lineup into a decorative asset. With touch-engaged LED backlighting, alligator embossing, a silver finish, inset glass panels and a modern silhouette, it will instantly elevate your happy hour setup. We love this piece for indoor and outdoor use alike. Plus, it comes with plenty of storage for bottles, stemware, bottle openers and more. Bring even more style to your mini bar set up with wall décor. You can add a cute sign, shelves to hold decorative bottles or a chic clock like our 21” Winston Wall Clock.

What Furniture Do I Need to Set Up a Mini Bar at Home?

What you include in your home mini bar furniture is completely up to you, but there are some basics you should have covered, especially if you plan on entertaining guests. Like any good bar, you want your guests to stick around. Invest in some comfortable, modern bar stools to give your guests reason to stay awhile. We love this backless modern stool for its eye-catching chrome and dark maple legs. You’ll want to make sure that you also have a flat surface that can accommodate the height of the stool, such as the Nicki Counter Height Table.

What Do You Need for a Basic Home Mini Bar?

The whole point of a mini bar setup is to give a designated space for drinks and entertaining. Along with seating and a bar surface, every home mini bar needs some sort of storage. A space to enjoy cocktails is great, but a minibar that is source of clutter cancels out the benefits. Invest in a spacious piece of mini bar furniture, like the Nicki Sideboard, to store all of your favorite libations. With slots for wine bottles and shelving space for liquor, stemware, and more, it’s a functional asset, a decorative boost, and a fun gathering spot. You can add it as bonus space, or you can use it as your main bar surface.

Whether you’re an aspiring mixologist or prefer an ice-cold beer, the mini bar cabinet is where the party’s at this summer. Score the perfect setup with the help of the team at The RoomPlace, and drop by one of our twenty locations across the Chicago and Indianapolis areas to get your perfect cocktail complement!

Entertainment Centers for Small Spaces

Manhattan 3 Piece Entertainment Center From The RoomPlaceFeatured Image: Manhattan 3 Piece Entertainment Center from The RoomPlace

While some entertainment centers can be on the large side, they certainly do not have to take over your living room. If you have a smaller living room, you might not want an extravagant TV stand that takes up half the room.

How Do I Make My TV Fit in Small Spaces?

Whether you’re trying to fit a TV in a smaller bedroom or living room, you want to find the right stand or entertainment center. To do this, you’ll want to focus on entertainment centers with more minimalist designs. These can still add style and even storage options to the space without being overbearing in size. If you’re worried you don’t have enough space for another piece of furniture, wall-mounted stands are always a great option.

How Big Should my Entertainment Center Be?

The size of your entertainment center depends just as much on the size of your television as it does the size of your room. If you don’t already have your TV picked out, be sure to choose on that doesn’t take up too much space. Remember, the screen size doesn’t always equal the entire TV size, so you’ll want to find the full width. For your entertainment center, you should look for ones that are a few inches wider than your TV.

So, what are the best entertainment centers for small spaces? It all depends on your style and storage preferences and how small your space is. Leave room for seating your guests on those big Game Day gatherings and other events with these stylish entertainment center ideas for small spaces.

#1: Minimalist Wall Units

If you like the storage capacity and traditional look of a wall unit entertainment center, you can still get the best of both worlds by choosing a minimalist style. In fact, a wall unit can be great for smaller rooms since it helps utilize wall space for storage purposes. In general, try to find an entertainment center that uses more vertical space and features a simple, sleek design. Even a minimalist unit, like our Crestview 3 Pc. Entertainment Wall, can become a stylish focal point of your living room.

#2: TV Stands

A small TV stand is a practical choice if you’ve been searching for an entertainment center for a small living room. Offering a contemporary look, TV stands often take up less space than wall units while still providing some storage for media and electronics. Look for stands that are 60” wide or smaller so you can preserve your living space as much as possible.

To make your entertainment stand a greater focal point in your living room, consider framing it on either side with shelves or wall décor for an added touch of style.

#3: Fireplace Entertainment Stands

For a dual-purpose entertainment center, consider opting for a fireplace that doubles as a TV stand. This option can deliver warmth when you need it and provides an intimate glow perfect for entertaining or everyday relaxation. Available in a range of sizes, fireplace entertainment centers offer all the storage and functionality of a traditional TV stand with the charming elegance of simulated fire.

#4: Wall-Mounted HDTV

For a truly minimalist look, a simple wall-mounted flat screen television can give your living area a fresh, modern look. If you need additional space to store your electronics and media, try adding a few rows of stylish wall shelving beneath the TV. This arrangement leaves plenty of room for seating and other furniture so you can enjoy your living room to its fullest potential.

Whether you choose a minimalist stand for your TV, a fireplace entertainment center that exudes warmth, or something in between, each of these ideas is perfect for adding both style and function to a small living room.

Eco-Friendly at The Roomplace

Make your choice Green!

What do you consider when you are choosing a place to buy furniture? We’re sure you probably think about the quality, cost, delivery options, financing, warranties, selection and reputation of the brand and/or furniture retailer. Is it fair to say that those are the most important factors? Maybe not. Have you ever considered not purchasing furniture from a retailer because they aren’t green, as in eco-friendly?

With the changes in the earth’s atmosphere, the concept of “going green” has gone from being a craze to being a lifestyle change for many people. Blue recycling bins can be found virtually everywhere, along with people who are willing to play their part to save our environment. However, saving our environment only begins with the small things that can fit into a can. What about larger items, such as a mattress, living room furniture or bedroom furniture? Do you think recycling furniture is eco-friendly?

How do I dispose of old furniture?

There are quite a few ways you can dispose of your old furniture to make room for a new set. If your furniture is still in decent condition, one of the best and most eco-friendly ways to get rid of it is by selling. This might take a little longer than calling a junk removal company, but it’s better for the planet. Plus, it will give you some extra money to spend on new The RoomPlace furniture. When you have furniture that’s in less-than-great condition, consider recycling. Not all furniture is easy to recycle, but you can usually find a way to do it depending on the base materials. For example, metal can be taken a scrap dealer.

How do I dispose of old mattresses?

If you’ve been browsing our selection of The RoomPlace mattresses and are wondering what to do with your current one, you have a few options. Mattresses aren’t something you usually want to sell, and depending on your state, there can even be some legal restrictions for selling a used mattress. This doesn’t mean you have to take a trip to the dump, though.

Here’s an interesting fact: While mattresses are one of the most difficult items to recycle, “95% of the material in mattresses is recyclable. Metal springs can be recycled and the steel reused. Polyurethane foam can be shredded and used for carpet pads and insulation. Wood in foundations can be processed by wood chippers used for fuel or mulch. (Source: Enviro-Recycle)” Powered with that knowledge, let us ask what do you think about recycling your old mattress. Would you go through a few extra steps to make sure your mattress is disposed of in an eco-friendly way? Or better yet, will your furniture retailer recycle your old mattress?

Do I have to call a private service to get rid of my old mattress?

You don’t always have to use a private service to dispose of your mattress. The furniture store you’re buying from will likely pick up your old mattress when they deliver your new one. However, it’s what they do with your mattress that matters.

While many companies prefer just throwing away that old mattress, The RoomPlace and our 300,000 square foot Distribution Center is playing a role in protecting our planet by being eco-friendly and recycling it. In fact, we are not only recycling mattresses, but The RoomPlace also recycles the packing materials such as the cardboard, Styrofoam and the plastic that is used to protect your bedroom or living room furniture prior to delivery.

Now, this is no small feat as the Distribution Center is responsible for supporting 21 stores within the Chicagoland and Indiana area. That means literally tons of recyclable material enter and exit those doors daily. For a better understanding of how much is recycled on a monthly basis, let’s review the numbers:

The Room Place recycles 41.835 tons of cardboard per month on average.

Fun Fact: Recycling 1 ton of cardboard saves 9 cubic yards of landfill space and 46 gallons of oil. (Source: Earth911)

Monthly The Room Place recycles 675 pounds of Styrofoam per month on average.

Fun Fact: A male Siberian Tiger (Amur Tiger) typically weighs between 450 – 675 lbs. (Source: Pittsburgh Zoo)

1,116 pounds of plastic is recycled through The Room Place’s Plastic Bailer Per Month.

Fun Fact: 1,116 pounds is equivalent to lifting 11 couches or 13 love seats from the Bravado Collection. By the way, the Bravado Living Room Collection is made of eco-leather and from an eco-friendly manufacturer.

Create a Peaceful Bedroom with Interior Designer, Kyle Schuneman!

Bedrooms are always my favorite rooms to design. I love how personal the spaces become and that they truly are for the people who live there. A lot of clients want to redo their living rooms or dining rooms because that’s what their guests see but spending time designing a beautiful bedroom for yourself is the epitome of #selfcare.

Where to Start

This bedroom design is all about sophistication and peace.  I started with the statement Cordelia bed because it brings in such drama.  I love the exaggeration of the height of the headboard as a play on scale. To keep the rest of the room serene I’d paint the walls a lighter grey to envelope the space and then continue with grey tones to keep the contrast low.

When designing a monochromatic room it’s important to keep the hues varied and the furniture items slightly different.  That way you end up with a cool and collected design as opposed to a boring and run-of-the-mill styled bedroom.

How to Accessorize

Starting with a patterned rug like the Seville in dove grey on the floor and then flanking the upholstered bed with large nightstands in a slightly darker shade help create that layered feel.  I went even darker with the Kellen dresser to be able to stand up to the large bed and not get lost.

Since every room needs some color and life, I saw these beautiful Dupree lamps in a shimmery blue and thought they were perfect!  They act like the jewelry to a great outfit finishing it off. I used a plaid chair in a similar blue to keep your eye moving around the room. Throw a turquoise pillow on the bed to complete the look and add a fiddle leaf fig (I always use a live plant in my designs) in the corner and you have a peaceful retreat made just for you!

Create Upscale Living with Interior Designer, Kyle Schuneman!

When decorating a living room you can never go wrong with a neutral palette but the key to a successful design is how you put it together.  In this room, since all the furniture was calm I wanted to splash some excitement on the walls with a sophisticated and rich green.  Now, sometimes people get scared to paint their walls but I think what makes neutral rooms work is that tension.  And also keep in mind when you’re painting, that curtains, artwork and furniture  will break up that color.

Where to Start

I always think of the floors as my fifth wall so I went with the really bold Torrey rug that has an earthy color palette.  It’s the star of the room and then everything is built around it.  The Stratus sectional is the perfect complement to it because it’s big and inviting but doesn’t fight it’s pattern.

As you probably know by now I love mixing materials so I went with a metal and glass coffee table to be able to see the pattern of the rug and then chose a wood and stone credenza to round out the layers. That mixing of textures starts to tell the story of your room and makes boring neutral turn into classic and rich.  The Cordova chair is a great pop of color to pull out of the rug. Yes, grey is a color!

How to Accessorize

Throw in some great accessories and you have a well-worn room that will be the backdrop for many family memories to come. And that’s the key to design – creating your family’s backdrop and story, so take the time to build the space that you want to envelope you for years!

Bring Farmhouse To Your Dining Room with Interior Designer, Kyle Schuneman!

For me, the key to any successful room is layering.  To achieve a farmhouse feel you want to add the right amount of different textures to get that eclectic yet relaxed vibe.  Mixing wood tones with metals and linens is a great recipe to get there.

Where to Start

For this room design, I started with…what else? The dining table! It’s the star of any dining room and should anchor the space so this large Cordova table feels substantial and interesting enough to hold the attention of the other pieces.  Next, it’s all about accessorizing with the chairs. For a Farmhouse feel I like mixing host chairs with side chairs. I chose large linen host chairs mixed with the industrial Davie side chairs to give a nice balance. Sit it all on top of an always classic jute rug and you’ve got the center of your room ready to go.

How to Accessorize

I like to then accessorize the walls around the main event.  A great sideboard like the Lakewood gives a beautiful surface for family treasures and hanging multiple mirrors above creates a dramatic feature wall. Mixing different wood tones starts to tell a story in a space without making it feel like it was all just bought off the showroom floor.

Lastly, and most importantly it’s time to add LIFE.  Fresh mixed flowers reflect that farm to table feel and a large potted plant in the corner like a black Olive tree spread the freshness around the room.  Pale oak creamy painted walls are a warm backdrop to the mix and match feel of the whole room without competing or adding a distraction.
