How to Rearrange Your Furniture for a Holiday Party

The holidays can be stressful, especially if you’ll be entertaining guests for a holiday party. With these tips from our design experts at The RoomPlace, you can learn how to rearrange your furniture for a holiday party without losing your unique sense of efficiency and style.

Figure Out Your Highest Party Priority

If you’re throwing a holiday party, it’s important to figure out your main priority so that you can rearrange furniture accordingly. For many families, for example, dinner is the main event, which means that you’ll need to make extra space for tables and chairs. If you’re hosting a dinner party, we recommend adding leaves to the dining room table and clearing out living room furniture to make space for additional tables and chairs. If your family’s main event revolves more around opening gifts, rearrange your furniture around the Christmas tree.

Remove What You Don’t Need

While it can be tempting to want to show off that great conversation piece you bought last year, when it comes to throwing a holiday party, you might want to consider removing any furniture that isn’t serving a specific purpose. Remember, people need space to move comfortably around the room.

Let Your Holiday Decorations Take Center Stage

You may end up having to remove certain furniture pieces to create a more functional party layout. By making your holiday decorations the focal point of your living room, you can take the attention away from empty spaces and create a festive environment for your holiday party.

Arrange for Small, Intimate Groups

Even if you have a large, open space, it’s important to place furniture in small groups to help create a sense of intimacy among you guests. No one wants to have to lean over superfluous furniture to hear what the other guests are saying, and if the furniture is arranged poorly, it can create unneeded social pressure.

Whether you’re designing a living room for entertaining or doing a full-scale redesign, The RoomPlace has living room furniture for every style. Browse online or a visit one of our furniture showrooms in Chicagoland or the Greater Indianapolis area today!

Which Bed Height is Right for You?

When you’re designing your perfect bedroom, it’s important to consider all the different factors that might impact your resting life. Deciding between a high vs. low bed is an important decision, which is why we’ve reviewed two common types of beds, standard and platform, and the pros and cons of each bed height.

Platform Beds

The average platform bed height is lower than most standard bed frames. Low platform beds offer a more modern look that many find aesthetically pleasing; however, it can also make it harder to get in and out of the bed, especially for older adults. Platform bed’s low height does make it safer for young children who may be getting in and out of the bed throughout the night.

Standard Beds

Because standard bed height tends to be higher than platform beds, they are easier to get in and out of, which can be especially helpful for older adults or anyone who plans to keep their bed frame through the aging process. Because there tends to be 25 inches in height from the floor to the top of the mattress, standard beds offer more potential for storage, which can be great for taking advantage of small bedroom spaces.

While the main factor in bed height is the frame itself, mattress height can also play a role, as factors like support levels, quality, and comfort determine the height of the mattress itself. This varies by brand and can make a difference in the height of your standard or platform bed.

What Rug Material is Right For You?

colorful wool rugWant to create a space that looks like it was decorated by a pro? Anchor the room with a great rug! Whether you’re using a rug to provide a pop of color or to create a defined area in a multi-purpose room, a rug can make a big difference in the overall feel of your space.

In addition to color and pattern, rug material should impact your purchase decision. Different rug materials offer a variety of pros and cons. Let’s go over some of the more popular rug material options.

Wool Rugs

Wool rugs are both soft and durable. They are long lasting and will look great for years even in the high traffic areas of your home. The material is naturally stain resistant.

Avoid placing wool rugs in basements or any room in your home that gets damp because they will absorb moisture. You should also avoid placing wool rugs in spaces that get a lot of direct sunlight because wool rugs will fade over time.

Wool rugs can be pricey but are a great value when you think of how long you’ll have them.

Cotton Rugs

If you’re looking to add a rug to your kitchen, dining room, or kid’s room, a cotton rug is the best choice. A small cotton rug can be thrown right into the washing machine so you won’t have to worry about food stains or dirt.
Cotton rugs are affordable and are a great choice for families with kids.

Natural Fiber Rugs

Natural fiber rug materials like Jute, Sisal, or Seagrass are great options for high traffic areas of your home. These rugs are usually available in neutral, earthy colors which makes they fit well in almost any décor scheme. These braided or woven rugs can be layered with a cotton or synthetic rug on top for a softer feel.
Natural fiber rugs are an affordable option but can be difficult to clean.

Synthetic Rugs

Synthetic is the most affordable of material choices when it comes to rugs, but that’s not the only benefit. If you are looking for a rug material that doesn’t shed, a synthetic flat weave rug is the best choice. Synthetic rugs are chemically treated to repel stains and water, so you can put them in the toughest areas of your home from the mudroom to the back patio.

Bar Stool Height Guide: Table Vs. Counter Vs. Pub Stools

Finding the perfect bar stools can be tricky. Not only is there color, style, and material to consider, but the right height is critical to a stool that is as functional as it is stylish. Narrowing down the right height for your bar, counter, or table is a great place to start when picking stools.

Start By Measuring

Grab a measuring tape, pencil, and paper. Measure from the floor to the top of the counter or table surface. Write down that number and subtract 10 inches to get the height of the stool you need for that space. A stool in that approximate range will be comfortable for a person of average height.

Remember to also measure the length of the counter to determine the number of stools that can fit in the space. A good rule of thumb is to allow 28 inches for each place setting.

counter stools.jpgCounter stools typically have a seat height of 24 inches and are usually the right size for use at a breakfast bar or kitchen counter. They also work well with dining tables in the 34-39 inch range. You’ll find counter stools with no back, half back and full back options.

bar stoolBar stool height is typically 30 inches to the seat. You may also see these stools referred to as pub stools online. Pub stool height is normally the same, but double check the dimensions before you buy.

table stoolTable stools aren’t sold in a standard height. They are generally sold as part of a dining set, but can be purchased individually. For a standard height table, look for a short stool or bench in the 18-22 inch range.

If you have non-standard height counter or table, an adjustable stool will be your best bet. The seat height on these stools can be adjusted up to 10 inches to perfectly fit your space. At The RoomPlace you’ll find dozens of stools in all sizes and styles. Shop our collection online or visit our showrooms in the Chicago or Indianapolis to find the right one for you.
